Effort values, or EVs, are a way to increase the stats of a Pokémon based on what wild Pokémon it defeats.

Bonus stats acquired due to Effort Values are gained in addition to those gained by increasing level. Effort values ensure that trained Pokémon are stronger than wild Pokémon.

There's a maximum of 252 EVs per stat and 510 EVs total.

Checking a Pokémon's Effort Values

To check your Pokémon's Effort Values, open the Pokémon's Summary and check the green number corresponding to each stat.

Earning Effort Values

Defeating Wild Pokémon

Each wild Pokémon, when defeated, yields between 1 and 3 Effort Values, which can be distributed in any way among the 6 stats and is inherent to the species. Generally, 1st stage Pokémon award 1 EV, 2nd stage Pokémon award 2 EVs and 3rd stage Pokémon award 3 EVs.

Only the Pokémon that is active when a wild Pokémon faints will receive EVs. Pokémon holding Exp Share that are not active at the time the wild Pokémon faints will not receive Effort Values either.

EV Targeting:

HP Caterpie +1 Viridian Forest
ATK Mankey +1, Ekans+1 Route 23
Def Metapod +2, Kakuna +2, Sandshrew +1 Viridian Forest
S.ATK Gastly +1,Haunter +2 Lavender Tower
S.DEF Tentacool +1, Tentacruel +2 Any surfing
SPEED Diglett +1, Dugtrio +2, Magikarp +1 Diglett Cave, any fishing
*Note- the above are simply the easiest way to grind out EVs quickly, and is in no way an exhaustive list of all EV sources.

Vitamins

Using Vitamins is another method to raise EVs, and each will raise a stat's Effort Values by 10. However, there are the following limitations:

  1. Vitamins cannot raise EVs for a specific stat past 100.
  2. Vitamins cannot be used on a Pokémon with over 500 total Effort Values.
Stat Vitamin
HP HP Up
Attack Protein
Defense Iron
Special Attack Calcium
Special Defense Zinc
Speed Carbos

Lowering Effort Values

The only way to reduce a Pokémon's EVs is to use an EV Reset, which will return all of its Effort Values to 0.

Impact on Stats

EVs boost stats according to the following formula:

Bonus Stats = \Biggl\lfloor {\biggl\lfloor \tfrac{EV}{4} \biggr\rfloor \times Level \over 100} \Biggr\rfloor

At level 100, every 4 Effort Values add up to 1 stat point. This means that Pokémon can get a maximum of 63 bonus points per stat, and 127 total, from EVs.
